The celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) has its origins in Mexico but is now also practiced in Central America and the Southwest-ern United States. The event commemorates the Christian feast of All Saints’ and All Souls’ days on November 1st and 2nd.  It is a family reunion and a community celebration. The event is not usually a somber affair, but  a joyful celebration of life and memories.

The event mixes popular folk-religious practices of sixteenth century Spain, which included food offerings for the dead with Mexica and other Mesoamerican traditions like honoring Mictecacihuatl, a deity of the underworld. Specific aspects of the tradition are difficult to trace, but Día de los Muertos is clearly rooted in both European and American cultures.

    All Souls’ Day Requiem

    Parish Choir, November 2017

    Tuesday, Nov. 2, 6 p.m., Historic Church
Because we were not able to gather as usual to celebrate the lives and resurrections of those we lost, this service for All Souls’ Day is being offered for loved ones who have died since February 2020. There will be a small reception after the service in Sumners Hall. All are invited to bring photos for the Día de los Muertos Altar.
